Brentwood, Contra Costa County
Brentwood takes its name from the town in Essex, England, that was the ancestral home of John Marsh, a pioneer rancher who bought land here in 1837. His stone house of 1856 still stands in the hills south of town. The city incorporated in 1948 and remained a small farm center until the 1990s, when it began to grow quickly.
